The story begins as Alex Mason an elite covert, is strapped to a chair in an interrogation room. Unaware of his whereabouts, he is questioned by his unseen captors about the location of a numbers station. His strange captors are trying to piece together a puzzle by interrogating him about his worldly adventures, bringing mysterious flashbacks of the years past. Each trip into the field is a memory, and these missions slowly come together to build momentum as each interrogation brings another piece of the puzzle in to place. Alex's faint memories hide information that must be revealed, and the erratic visual effects and echoes that come with the flashbacks, create a feeling of uncertainty that plays out in surprising and satisfying ways. Most of the missions in the game are presented as flashbacks between 1961 and 1968 and the single player mode is set in Cold War territories like Cuba, Russia and Vietnam.
